Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 18, 2019) – Derek Hagar was on track to pocket another top-five result last Saturday during the 12th annual Ralph Henson Memorial.
Hagar hustled into the top five before I-30 Speedway took rubber and he was running just outside a spot on the podium when a tire blew in the final laps of the ASCS Mid-South Region and ASCS Sooner Region feature.
“Everyone was stacking up on the bottom and I could roll the middle really well,” he said. “It was working good until the track took rubber. Then I got to the bottom and kind of rode. We were coming off turn two when the tire blew with about two laps to go. It was unfortunate because we had a good run going.”
Hagar, who was credited with a 14th-place result, had passed a lot of cars throughout the night. He charged from eighth to fourth during both a heat race and the Race of Champions.
“It was a good car count,” he said. “My pill draw skills aren’t the best. We started in the back of the heat race and got up to fourth, which put me 10th in points. We kept passing cars in the feature and were on our way to a good result when the tire let go.”
Hagar was able to capitalize on a strong run the previous weekend as he maneuvered from 11th to fifth during the Fall Nationals at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark. It was his 20th top five of the season.
“We got up to third and we had a long red,” he said. “Our right rear tire got low so that hurt us. The track had a big, gnarly cushion and there were some hail mary slide jobs. We tried to take it easy and finish the race and we ended up coming home fifth.”
Next up for Hagar is the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial this Thursday through Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. He won the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event in 2014.
“It’s been a special event for us and we’ve had some good success with a wing on and in non-wing,” he said. “I’m excited to race these three nights and see where we stack up with these guys.”
