HAUBSTADT, Ind. – When a scheduled appearance in Tony Epperson’s No. 2e machine at Bloomington Speedway was washed away by rain, Hunter Schuerenberg took the opportunity the following night to take his own winged car to Tri-State Speedway for the Southern Indiana Stampede to see what he could do. Competing with the Midwest Open Wheel Association, Schuerenberg won both his heat race and the dash event, and came home third in the main event, only to move up one spot in the scoring when one competitor was disqualified for illegal equipment.

The night started off with Schuerenberg on the pole of his heat race, and he handily took the checkered in the ten-lap race. The dash lineup was favorable for the Sikeston, Mo. native, as he’d be starting from the pole. Six laps separated him from the main event pole. Not to be deterred, Schuerenberg again put the race away in short order, parking his machine on the front stretch as the dash winner.

A feature distance of 25 laps around the quarter-mile, which features corners tighter than one would find almost anywhere else in racing, was the last event on the card for the night. Hoping to sweep the night, Schuerenberg set a brisk pace following a lap-four caution and subsequent restart. Quickly into lapped traffic, he began to pick the slower cars apart and pull away from his challengers. After another caution with nine laps to go, Schuerenberg found his padding from lapped cars gone. Parker Price-Miller was sitting second and made his move on the restart, sliding his machine under the No. 20N entering turn one to take the lead. Schuerenberg attempted to run him back down, but another slidejob, this time from Kevin Thomas, Jr., halted that effort. Two more yellows would fly in the waning laps, but Schuerenberg would ultimately take the checkered in third. However, when Thomas’ car was determined to have an illegal tire compound and consequently disqualified, Schuerenberg’s finishing position was elevated to second in the final running order.

Schuerenberg would like to thank Roof Bolt Express, Nolen Racing, Mach 1 Chassis, Competition Suspension Inc., AFCO Racing, ButlerBuilt Professional Seat Systems, Hinchman Racewear, Keizer Wheels, High Side Design, and Ron Gorby’s Howard Johnson, as well as all of his fans for their continued support.

Schuerenberg is next scheduled to compete on July 3-4 in the “1st Annual Bill Gardner Sprintacular” at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Ind. with the Midwest Sprint Car Series and the United States Auto Club National Sprint Car Series in the Epperson No. 2e 410ci wingless sprint entry.
